Johnson & Johnson DePuy Orthopaedics ASR Hip Implants Recall

DePuy Hip Implant Product Recall Lawyers

On August 26, 2010, DePuy Orthopaedics, a division of Johnson & Johnson, issued a voluntary recall of two of their hip replacement systems, the ASR™ XL Acetabular System and DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System.  Studies found that many patients who received these DePuy hip implants suffer from symptoms including pain, swelling and difficulty walking, and have to undergo a revision surgery to correct painful issues with the implants.

The Problems with DePuy Hip Implants

These symptoms are caused by design flaws in the hip implant systems.  When the implant becomes loosened from the bone, pain can occur.  Symptoms may also arise when the implant becomes dislocated or fractured.  Ball and socket components in the implant rub against each other and can be damaged over time.  When this occurs, metal particles are released and some patients may suffer a reaction to the particles, causing fluid build-up around muscles and joints.  This accumulation can lead to swelling, pain, and may damages nerves, muscles, joints and bones in the area of the hip implant.

According to the DePuy Orthopaedics website, one in eight patients who received the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System or the ASR™ XL Acetabular System, a total hip replacement, needed a second surgery.  Consumers in the U.S. should note that the Hip Resurfacing System was not approved in the United States, however the ASR™ XL Acetabular System was available everywhere.
