Coronavirus Outbreaks in Cook County Have Become Cyclical

We took a closer look at COVID-19 related infections and deaths in Cook County. In this region, outbreaks have become cyclical in some cases, and the vaccine roll-out has been slow. On Friday, Feb. 26, these suburban Chicago and Cook County facilities remained centralized locations for the most recent outbreaks and documented by IDPH for having open infection cases.

More than half of all COVID-19 cases can be traced to Illinois’ skilled nursing facilities, proving that nursing homes still aren’t doing enough to protect residents and workers from the highly infectious disease. The reason for the stagnancy in infections is that many of these Cook County homes are still proving ill-equipped to deal with infectious disease. Most are also without skilled administrative leadership and are lacking resources for the many over-crowded and under-staffed facilities.

Families and care workers must continue their fight. And we need to make others aware of administrative shortcomings and failures in oversight so that fewer residents succumb to COVID-19 and its fatal risk.

Why Nursing Home Residents Remain Largely at Risk of COVID-19

Unfortunately, willful neglect, preventable accidents and illnesses, and abuse are occurring at alarming numbers only magnified the pandemic. Also, many older adults reliant on nursing home care do have limitations that impair their ability to respond to an infectious disease or emergency, such as:

  • Disabilities that have impaired their mobility
  • Diminished sensory awareness due to Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia
  • Multiple chronic health conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, lung diseases, hypertension, cancer, and diabetes
  • Social and economic limitations related to health care coverage and access to medical resources
  • Disruptions in the vital support systems they rely on, such as understaffed nursing homes due to worker illness
  • Lack of caregiver preparedness and emergency management by the facilities they reside in

Staff, residents, and families should follow state guidelines and adhere to federal infection prevention policies until infection rates have significantly dropped and revised. As a reminder, COVID-19 has taken a tragic toll on our state’s most vulnerable.

  • In Illinois, since the pandemic began, there has been a total of 1,181,226 cases, including 20,406 deaths, in all 102 counties.
  • Nearly 1,500 individuals in Illinois remain to be in the hospital with COVID-19.
  • More than 300 Illinois patients are in the ICU, and 168 patients with COVID-19 are on ventilators.

Even the most highly-rated and expensive care facilities have been challenged by understaffed departments. And ill-equipped workers have not been trained to care for residents properly. As we continue to monitor the pandemic and related long-term care challenges in Illinois, we encourage you to take a closer look at Illinois nursing homes with COVID-19 outbreaks and infections as a way to protect your loved ones.

Our team of nursing home abuse and neglect attorneys hasn’t stopped supporting families who have lost loved ones in cases of negligent care. We also are here to help overworked staff who have been forced into roles where state and federal COVID guidelines can’t be met inside the nursing homes they work due to poor administrative oversight. Our thoughts are with all the residents and their families and care staff who continue to battle this disease’s effects.
