Meadowbrook Manor Reports Another COVID-19 Death, Highest Case Rate in Will County

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reports another COVID-19 death at Meadowbrook Manor in Bolingbrook in Will County. The facility has been home to 41 deaths since the start of the pandemic, with the majority related to an outbreak in May. This is the first death noted since May 29th.

  • The facility has the highest number of deaths in Illinois among any other long-term care facility.
  • The number of cases at the home is 188, the highest in Will County.
  • As of Friday, July 24th, IDPH reports show 42 COVID-19 deaths at Meadowbrook since March.

Recent numbers from across the state show that the coronavirus currently has hold of 355 people in hospital intensive care units, and put 152 on ventilators, according to IDPH. That’s about 8% higher than previously reported numbers posted Monday, July 27th.

Why is Meadowbrook Manor of Bolingbrook Continuing to Struggle?

Meadowbrook Manor of Bolingbrook is located at 431 Remington Boulevard in Bolingbrook and has earned an underperforming 2 out of 5-star quality rating by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for years. With 298 beds, the facility continues to have the most COVID-19 cases of any other long-term care facility in Will County. Noted in several 2019-2020 inspections reports, deficiencies related to an increase in infectious disease risks includes:

  • Provide appropriate pressure ulcer care and prevent new ulcers from developing.
  • Provide safe and appropriate respiratory care for a resident when needed.
  • Implement gradual dose reductions (GDR) and non-pharmacological interventions, unless contraindicated, prior to initiating or instead of continuing psychotropic medication; and PRN orders for psychotropic medications are only used when the medication is necessary and PRN use is limited.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to prevent abuse, neglect, and theft.
  • Honor the resident’s right to a dignified existence, self-determination, communication, and to exercise his or her rights.
  • Ensure that residents are fully informed and understand their health status, care and treatments.
  • Ensure that each resident is free from the use of physical restraints, unless needed for medical treatment.
  • Respond appropriately to all alleged violations.
  • Provide care and assistance to perform activities of daily living for any resident who is unable.

Will County nursing homes have collectively reported 102 deaths, according to IDPH. And Meadowbrook makes up 40 percent of all COVID-19 mortality in the county. St. James Manor in Crete has the second-highest number of fatalities totaling 21. Symphony of Joliet, which once had the most cases and deaths and is now closed.
