Failures in Care at Aperion Care Peoria Heights Result in Resident Complaints

When placing a loved one in the care of a nursing home or health care facility, you have their best interests in mind. You hope that the nursing home is providing the full-time care that they should be, and that they're treating your loved one with respect, meeting all of their medical and daily life needs.

The sad reality is nursing home neglect and abuse is a real and present problem in Illinois, not to mention across the United States. It's distressing to think our elders are being mistreated, neglected, their needs ignored. You hope that this would never happen where your loved one is a resident.

Our research has found improper skin ulcer care, careless staff, poor hygiene, and dirty, unsanitary conditions:

03/09/2018 Failure to provide care for residents in a way that keeps or builds each resident's dignity and respect of individuality. A resident was observed sitting in the dining room at lunch time (noon) with wet pants, with visible dark yellow wet area on her inner thighs and a strong urine odor. She was served her food and pushed closer in to the table with no reports to nursing staff regarding her incontinence. She ate her lunch with soaked clothes. Later she was observed in her room (2:30pm) with the same wet pants and same urine smell.

03/09/2018 Failure to 1) Make sure that each resident's drug regimen is free from unnecessary drugs; 2) Each resident's entire drug/medication is managed and monitored to achieve highest well-being. Antipsychotic medication was being used on a resident that did not have an evaluation for needing psychoactive medication, even though there was a request on their admitting paperwork to re-evaluate the need for the medication (from a month prior)

03/09/2018 Failure to Make sure that each resident gets a nutritional and well-balanced diet, unless it is not possible to do so. A resident who has a history of significant weight loss has been prescribed supplemental nutrition "magic cups," but it was observed that during multiple meals, the resident didn't get the supplement. This resident dropped 12 percent of their weight from January to February - a significant loss.

1/31/2018 Failure to provide appropriate pressure ulcer care and prevent new ulcers from developing. Multiple patients had documentation of pressure ulcers or risk for pressure ulcers. There were specific care instructions listed on file. There was also no record of these treatment plans actually being followed on several occasions.

1/17/2018 Failure to provide and implement an infection prevention and control program. A patient with a known MRSA infected wound was observed getting a dressing change. The nurse treated the wound as any other, with no protection precautions, and didn't even disinfect the scissors (That had cut through drainage-soaked bandage) before using them to open the fresh dressing package and cut the gauze. MRSA is highly contagious, difficult to treat, and extra precautions should be taken to avoid contamination.

Our deepest appreciation to the law firm of Levin & Perconti, and in particular to Margaret Battersby Black, in the handling of the lawsuit we field n behalf of our sister who sustained life-threatening injuries as a nursing home resident. Margaret’s representation, guidance, and professionalism gave us the sense that we could put our trust in Levin & Perconti and the final outcome proved that to be true. D.G., Nursing Home Client

I want to send my heartfelt thanks to John Perconti and the Levin & Perconti staff in taking our case. Not only were they so professional but also so caring and thoughtful. It was very difficult going over the facts in our mother's case but they were so compassionate and understanding and allowed us to be with them every step of the way. We were able to sit in on the depositions and we were really able to see how hard they worked on our behalf. M.R.Z., nursing home client
