Resident Injured in Transfer at ManorCare Palos Heights West

Nursing homes should be a place of comfort and recovery, with professional staff providing full-time care for residents. They should be respectful of residents, meeting all of their needs; both medical and daily, allowing them to recuperate, and live happily and comfortably. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. It’s disheartening to think that your loved one may be neglected or even abused while in the care of a nursing home or health care center, but it is all too common.

At Levin & Perconti, we fight for families who have been victimized by nursing homes. We share the facts about these facilities, including their health violations and citations, and hold them accountable for their failures in care. Read on to learn more about ManorCare of Palos Heights West;

Our research found that ManorCare Palos Heights West has had 20 health complaints that have resulted in citations in the past 3 years. Some of these citations include medication errors, infection control issues, and a transfer mishap leading to the hospitalization of a resident:

12/05/2016 Failure to ensure that a nursing home area is free from accident hazards and provides adequate supervision to prevent accidents. A CNA attempted a transfer of a resident without assistance and without a mechanical lift device. The resident’s leg twisted, resulting in an injury that required surgery. The residents’ care card indicated that they needed to be transferred with a mechanical lift.

12/14/2017 Failure to provide and implement an infection prevention and control program. An RN was observed to not follow proper infection control protocol while taking glucose readings. She placed the meter in her pocket, also where her clean gloves were, and failed to properly wipe the unit down with a disinfectant towel.

06/12/2018 Failure to ensure medication error rates are not 5 percent or greater. Multiple errors in insulin administration were made during the observation period, as well as a completely arbitrary amount of a topical medicine applied when specific dosing and a dosing card is provided.
