Failures in Care Result in Injuries at ManorCare Westmont
Sometimes you have no choice but to place your loved one in nursing home care – complex care needs and around-the-clock care are best handled by professionals. Of course, when you place a loved one in a nursing home or health care center, you are trusting them to care for your loved one with respect, to give them their due dignity, and to provide them with the medical and personal care they need, whether they are rehabilitating from a hospitalization or in a long-term care situation.
But, in today’s world, you wonder if the high standards of care these nursing homes advertise are actually what is given. What happens after visiting hours have passed? What aren’t you seeing? Unfortunately, your concerns are valid. Nursing home neglect and abuse is a problem in Illinois and across the nation that many people don’t even know is happening. It could even be your loved one who isn’t getting proper care.
Many of these facilities have long lists of state and federal health violations that, even though the information is public record, you may not be aware of. After all, these facilities aren’t going to be quick to share those details, it’d be bad for business.
We at Levin & Perconti are dedicated to sharing the truth about these facilities throughout Illinois, exposing their violations, and holding these sub-par nursing homes responsible for their actions. Read on to learn details about ManorCare Westmont:

ManorCare Westmont is a 149-bed “for-profit” nursing home facility in Westmont, IL. This facility offers post-hospital rehabilitation care and long-term residential care. The ManorCare website boasts that their facilities are “vital medical care and rehabilitation centers with a commitment to specialized care that focuses on individual needs.”
ManorCare Westmont has had 9 complaints that have resulted in citations in the past three years, and a total of 23 health inspection citations since 2017. Some of these citations have included mishandled transfers leading to injuries, unsafe feeding tube, and IV medication practices, unnecessary antipsychotic medication administered, improper infection control measures, and medication errors in timing.
10/11/2017 Failure to make sure that the nursing home area is free from accident hazards and risks and provides supervision to prevent avoidable accidents. Multiple failures in safe patient transfer protocol resulted in injuries. One resident suffered a broken tibia when the CNAs attempted a single-man transfer to help her dress. She fell, catching her leg under the bed with an audible crack. Another resident, a paraplegic with no sensation from the waist down suffered a broken tibia/fibula after an improperly performed transfer resulted in the resident’s legs not pivoting/being moved properly; the left leg was broken.
01/24/2018 Failure to ensure that feeding tubes are not used unless there is a medical reason and the resident agrees; and provide appropriate care for a resident with a feeding tube. A staff member did not follow proper feeding tube protocols regarding medication administration for a resident. They did not check the tube for proper placement nor did they properly flush the tube with water after administering medications. These mistakes could cause a host of complications, including the medication being delivered to the lung instead of the stomach, which can result in pneumonia.
01/24/2018 Failure to provide for the safe, appropriate administration of IV fluids for a resident when needed. A resident was receiving an extended course of antibiotics through a PICC line. There were no records of measuring the circumference of the arm or the external catheter length, nor any records of dressing changes.
01/24/2018 Failure to provide appropriate pressure ulcer care and prevent new ulcers from developing. A resident who is totally dependent on staff for all daily living activities developed a large pressure sore in the tailbone area. The staff had multiple excuses as to why the wound presented, fear of disturbing medical devices in place and weight gain (which according to records was false) were presented.

Testimonials
Not only were they so professional but also so caring and thoughtful. It was very difficult going over the facts in our mother's case but they were so compassionate and understanding and allowed us to be with them every step of the way. We were able to sit in on the depositions and we were really able to see how hard they worked on our behalf.
