ManorCare of Hinsdale is a large facility with 202 beds that offers short- and long-term care as well as memory care. Medicare gives them an overall average rating. Despite having a higher than average number of patients on a daily basis, they score an above average rating for the categories of staffing and quality of resident care. Their rating for health inspections is below average, however, due to instances of improper medical treatment, such as those described below.

10/12/18 Failure to develop and implement a complete care plan that meets all the resident’s needs, with timetables and actions that can be measured. Staff failed to establish a care plan for a cognitively-challenged resident whose habit of picking and digging at their face causes bleeding.

10/12/18 Failure to provide pharmaceutical services to meet the needs of each resident and employ or obtain the services of a licensed pharmacist. The facility failed to follow processes to dispose of expired medications, to date opened vials, and to order resident medications in a timely manner. One resident’s insulin prescription had not been refilled before the supply ran out and staff “borrowed” another resident’s insulin in the meantime.

10/12/18 Failure to provide safe and appropriate respiratory care for a resident when needed. Staff failed to ensure emergency equipment was at hand for a resident receiving respiratory services. A respiratory therapist treating the resident found that the facility did not provide back-up equipment at residents’ bedsides for those using a trach, despite doctor’s orders.

How to Protect Residents

With more and more seniors entering assisted living facilities, every family has reason to worry about the level of care and respect your own loved one may receive. But there are ways to prevent and stop elder abuse so that you and your family can rest easy and feel more confident in your loved one’s care.

First, research reviews and ratings for any facility you are considering, and continue to do so after your relative has moved in. Pay attention to any cuts in staff or changes in management. Stay in touch with your relative and visit as often as possible to check on their well-being and observe staff behaviors and the cleanliness of the facility.

Inform yourself on the signs of elder abuse and neglect. There are many, but some visible signs include unexplained injuries and weight loss, untreated sores, and poor hygiene. Abused seniors may also exhibit disconcerting behaviors such as becoming withdrawn, reacting violently, rocking back and forth, or expression feelings of depression or confusion.

Also note any instances in which your loved one received the wrong type or dosage of medication, has an unsanitary room or bathroom, or frequently misplaced or missing belongings.
