ManorCare of Homewood has 132 beds and offers both short- and long-term care for residents, as well as memory care and outpatient rehabilitation. However, they have a below average rating on, with a below average health inspection rating and only average staffing and quality measures ratings.

While ManorCare of Homewood has an average number of staff per resident, their percentage of residents with bedsores, urinary tract infections, and moderate to severe pain was higher than average, which is worrisome. Recent health inspections reported the following incidents:

3/21/18 Failure to provide appropriate treatment and care according to orders, resident’s preferences and goals. A resident complained of soreness and swelling in their leg. A doctor ordered an exam but the exam was postponed by nurses until seven days later, allowing the swelling and pain to get worse and putting the patient at risk for a pulmonary embolism and death. Staff stated that the facility does not have a policy on following physicians’ orders, and this is a standard practice.

3/20/18 Failure to provide appropriate pressure ulcer care and prevent new ulcers from developing. It was found that two residents did not receive adequate repositioning required to prevent and treat existing bedsores.

3/23/18 Failure to provide enough food/fluids to maintain a resident’s health. Staff failed to assess a resident’s lack of food intake and weight loss and neglected to notify the patient’s physician and spouse in a timely fashion. Incomplete meal intake sheets and once-a-month weight checks were blamed.

What You Should Look For

It can be difficult for an elderly resident to recognize or report abuse and neglect, so always be vigilant when you visit or speak to them and be aware of signs of mistreatment. Don’t be afraid to question the facility about practices that seem incorrect or if anything about your loved one’s care seems inadequate or lacking.

Some signs of abuse and neglect will be physically obvious, such as unexplained fractures, burns, bruising, or scars. Other signs to look for include poor hygiene, untreated pressure ulcers, frequent trips to the hospital, and sunken cheeks or eyes indicating poor blood circulation.

New behaviors may also indicate mistreatment and trauma. If your relative begins to withdraw from loved ones, lash out violently, have trouble sleeping, rocks back and forth, or displays signs of confusion or depression, there may be cause for concern.

Also pay attention to the care of the facility and staff behaviors. If you become aware of instances of the wrong type or dosage of medication being administered or any disregard for privacy or dignity, or if you observe signs of uncleanliness or personal belongings being lost or misplaced, it’s time to take some action.
