ManorCare of Oak Lawn East
It’s no secret that there are good assisted living facilities and bad ones. Good facilities give the best medical and personal care to seniors in a clean, pleasant environment where staff are professional and respectful. Bad facilities are understaffed or staffed with unqualified, careless employees, putting residents at risk for neglect and medical mistakes. How do you know what kind of environment a facility fosters when you are looking for accommodations for an aging relative?
The answer is thorough research and continued vigilance. Before placing your loved one in a nursing home, do extensive vetting of the facilities in your area. Today you can research reviews and ratings online that will tell you what others have experienced and what health inspections have found. For instance, Medicare performs annual inspections and assigns ratings to nursing homes which are published online as public records with details of any infractions or filed complaints. Using these records, you can determine the safest facility for your loved one.
At Levin & Perconti, we help families like yours find this information easily on our website, helping you make an informed decision when it comes time to find assisted living for senior relatives. Unfortunately, many of our clients discovered too late that the nursing home they picked was inadequate— even dangerous— for their loved one. Elder care abuse and neglect is rampant in nursing homes today, and we’ve seen many of the forms it takes. Our attorneys have prosecuted facilities for the following crimes and more.
- Alzheimer's and Dementia Patients
- Clogged Breathing Tubes
- Malnutrition and/or Dehydration
- Physical or Sexual Assault or Abuse
- Pressure Sores
- Wandering and Elopement from facilities
- Sepsis and Other Infections
- Unauthorized Physical and/or Chemical Restraint Use
- Verbal Abuse
- Falls, Improper Transfers, Drops by Staff
- Medication Errors
There is no excuse for treatment like this at the hands of caregivers. That’s why Levin & Perconti is dedicated to providing families the information they need to pick the best Illinois assisted living facility for their loved one and fighting for their rights when the care provider they pick fails to deliver a high quality of care and service.About ManorCare of Oak Lawn East
9401 South Kostner Avenue
Oak Lawn, IL 60453
ManorCare of Oak Lawn East is a nursing home with 122 beds that offers both short- and long-term care and memory care. Medicare gives the facility an overall Average rating. This rating considers Above Average ratings for staff and quality measures as well as a Below Average rating for health inspections.
The staff rating comes from the higher than average number of staff hours on site per residents, meaning residents have appropriate access to staff. The level of care as measured by Medicare’s quality measures was also found to be above average, as the majority of both short- and long-term residents were found to have received the care they required.
The biggest blemish on ManorCare of Oak Lawn East’s ratings is its Below Average health inspections. A health inspection in 2018 found a number of infractions that led to this rating, including those listed below. Medicare’s records do not elaborate on the details of these instances, but each affected at least a few residents with “minimal harm or potential for actual harm” inflicted. This facility has more infractions documented than most of the other ManorCare locations in Illinois.
8/16/2018 Failure to provide care and assistance to perform activities of daily living for any resident who is unable.
8/16/18 Failure to provide safe and appropriate respiratory care for a resident when needed.
8/16/18 Failure to procure food from sources approved or considered satisfactory and store, prepare, distribute and serve food in accordance with professional standards.
8/16/18 Failure to honor the resident’s right to a safe, clean, comfortable and homelike environment, including but not limited to receiving treatment and supports for daily living safely. How to Protect Seniors
As we said before, the first thing you can do to protect your elderly loved one from neglect or abuse at their nursing home is to do your research and pick a safe facility. But even the best-rated homes can have incidents. All it takes is one mistake or bad employee to cause a resident harm.
Once your relative has taken up residence, continue to check in on them regularly. Ask them about how they’re being treated and make visits yourself to observe the staff and general practices of the facility. Also keep tabs on ratings and reviews for the facility online for the duration of your loved one’s stay there. A great facility can fall on hard times or change management at any time and see standards slip.
Inform yourself of the signs of abuse and neglect. These are many and varied, but some obvious ones to begin with are physical and behavioral signs that your relative is being mistreated. Look for unexplained injuries like fractures, burns, and bruises, or if your relative appears unkempt or has poor hygiene. Take note if they suddenly become withdrawn, depressed, easily confused, or violent.
Also document any instances of falls, wandering, or improper administration of medicine or medical treatments. Note if your loved one’s room or bathroom are dirty or if their belongings are frequently misplaced or lost.
If you become aware of anything that seems off, document immediately. Keep records of anything suspicious or egregiously wrong. Question staff on their protocols if something seems amiss, and document their answers. Take your findings to the facility’s administration. If they do not offer satisfactory answers or solutions, you may need to resort to legal action.Fight for Your Loved One’s Rights
