Protocols to wash hands and change gloves to prevent the spread of germs during catheter care were not followed while cleansing catheter sites on two residents, putting them at risk for infections.

9/19/18 Failure to ensure that feeding tubes are not used unless there is a medical reason and the resident agrees; and provide appropriate care for a resident with a feeding tube. Staff failed to check placement of a resident’s feeding tube and failed to position the resident properly before using the tube, putting the resident at risk of aspiration.

9/20/18 Failure to honor the resident’s right to be treated with respect and dignity and to retain and use personal possessions. A resident was repeatedly dressed in a hospital gown upon admittance to the facility despite his wishes to wear the clothes he brought with him.

The first step in protecting elderly relatives from abuse and neglect in nursing homes is to pick a facility that offers excellent care. You can research ratings and reviews online from other families like yours and in public records published by government agencies, such as Medicare.

Tour multiple facilities before picking one for your loved one and observe what kind of environment they foster. Are staff friendly and is the facility clean? Do their protocols for the kind of care your relative requires fit normal standards?

Second, when you place your family member in assisted living, conduct regular welfare checks on them and stay in contact so you can keep tabs on how they are being treated. Visit often so you can continue to observe staff behaviors and the general upkeep of the facility. Ask questions if anything seems off.

Third, learn the signs of abuse and neglect. These are many and varied, but some obvious ones to start with are physical and behavioral signs your loved one may display. Watch for unexplained injuries or if your relative appears unkempt or unwashed. Note if they suddenly become withdrawn, violent, depressed, or easily confused.

Other signs could include frequent hospitalization, wandering, severe bedsores, a dirty room, or any instances of medical treatments or medicine being administered incorrectly.

If anything seems amiss, document everything you see or know and take your findings to the facility’s management. If they do not respond with satisfactory answers and solutions, or become dismissive and uncooperative, it may be time to take things a step further.
