Medicare assigned an overall rating of Below Average to South Holland Manor for 2018. While the facility earned Above Average ratings in quality measures and staffing, their Much Below Average health inspection rating brings their overall quality into question. This poor rating is due to a number of infractions and complaints, including the following:

9/20/18 Failure to reasonably accommodate the needs and preferences of each resident. Four residents were reported to not have easy access to their call lights, preventing them from requesting help if needed.

9/20/18 Failure to provide appropriate pressure ulcer care and prevent new ulcers from developing. Staff failed to prevent and treat pressure ulcers on a resident, resulting in a painful wound on the resident’s buttocks.

7/31/18 Failure to provide appropriate pressure ulcer care and prevent new ulcers from developing. Staff failed to administer pain medication to a resident with a history of pressure ulcers before turning him, causing pain. A staff member also neglected to find help to reposition resident after he complained of pain, leaving him in one position too long.

Pick the Right Home

The first step to prevent elder abuse is picking a well-regarded facility for your loved one. You can do this by doing thorough research into nursing home reviews and ratings online. You can look up what other residents and their families have had to say about their experiences at the facilities you’re considering as well as read public records published by government agencies who inspect nursing homes, such as Medicare. With your findings you can narrow down your options for a safe space for your relative.

Taking a tour of the facility is also a must, but do be aware that the tours are designed to show the very best of a residence and hide any flaws. You might consider taking multiple tours or even visiting unannounced one day to ask some questions.

Protect Your Loved One

Once your family member is placed in an assisted living facility, it’s up to you to stay vigilant about the care they receive. Your loved one may not be able to recognize or report neglect and will rely on your help. You can help by communicating and visiting with them often to check on their well-being. This also gives you a chance to personally observe the facility’s day-to-day appearance and staff behavior.

You should also be informed as to what signs of abuse and neglect to watch for. There are many signs, but you can start with the obvious physical and behavioral ones. Note if your relative displays any unexplained injuries, untreated bedsores, or poor hygiene. Frequent hospitalizations can be cause for concern. Also watch for sudden behavioral changes, such as becoming violent, withdrawn, or unusually confused.
