When a baby is born depressed with signs of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy or HIE, those babies need immediate treatment from the neonatal team. That could involve intubation, bag and mask, giving medications, all designed to help stabilize the baby. After that point, they also will often receive what’s called therapeutic hypothermia or cooling, and that’s designed to help prevent secondary brain damage because as brain damage occurs, the brain starts to swell, which can injure other parts of the brain.
