Illinois’ Largest Nursing Home Verdict: $12.2M Secured by Levin & Perconti

Record $12.2 Million Nursing Home Verdict in Cook County

A Cook County jury has awarded a Chicago family $12.2 million for the negligent nursing care that led to their mother’s death, marking the largest nursing home verdict in Illinois history. The case was tried by Paul Connery of Levin & Perconti, who secured the record-setting result after a focused three-day trial in the Circuit Court of Cook County.

Swift Jury Decision After Three-Day Trial

The jury deliberated for just 90 minutes before finding Lakeview Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, LLC, and its management company, Infinity Healthcare Management of Illinois, LLC, responsible for the preventable pressure wounds that ultimately took Ms. Adams’s life

What Happened to the Victim?

Our client, Ms. Shirley Adams, lived at home with her family on the West Side of Chicago before being admitted to Lakeview Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in June 2021. She was in good physical health, but her early-stage dementia required her family to turn to a nursing home for help. Her family noticed a rapid deterioration in her condition after she was admitted, including that she was brought to see them in a wheelchair during visits. Up until then, she had been walking with only the occasional assistance of a cane. Ms. Adams’ family alleged that due to the inadequate staffing, care planning, and treatment, she developed pressure wounds within three months of her admission, after effectively becoming bedbound.

Despite being transferred to a different facility and receiving extensive daily treatment, Ms. Adams never recovered from her injuries and passed away.

What Damages Did the Plaintiff Claim?

As a result of the nursing home’s negligence, Ms. Adams underwent and suffered:

  • Over 20 surgical debridements of her wounds
  • Daily painful treatments
  • Multiple courses of antibiotics
  • Wrongful death

Why This Verdict Matters

Ms. Adams, a 79-year-old mother of five, deserved safe, attentive care. Her family entrusted Lakeview Rehabilitation and Nursing Center with her wellbeing, only for that trust to be violated by grossly inadequate treatment.

“Mrs. Adams suffered through extensive and painful treatments for the last 16 months of her life because of inexcusable, basically non-existent, nursing care,” said Paul Connery, partner at Levin & Perconti. “The jury’s verdict recognized the pain that she and her family endured. This decision moves the Adams family one step closer to healing.”

This verdict underscores a simple truth: nursing homes must be held accountable when they fail the people they’re entrusted to protect.

Levin & Perconti remains committed to fighting for families harmed by negligence and to driving real accountability across Illinois’s long-term care system.

“This is another example of nursing home operators and owners putting profits over people and not providing the level of care that is required. This was a preventable tragedy. The Adams family received justice and accountability. But it will not bring their mother back nor make up for the suffering she endured,” said Steve Levin, founding partner of Levin & Perconti.
