What Tools are Used to Detect if a Baby is in Distress During a Pregnancy?

Video Transcript

One of the most important tools that is available to identify when a baby is being stressed during pregnancy is an electronic fetal monitor.
We like to refer to that as EM, but basically the machine has two belts, and you put one belt around the mom’s tummy.
And you try to put it in a position where you can hear the baby’s heart rate, we can actually print the fetal heart rate on a piece of paper that looks very similar to when adults go to their cardiologist and they have an EKG done, and there are very important features that the medical profession is taught.
To look at in order to determine whether they’re looking at a normal healthy fetal heart rate, suggesting that the baby is getting adequate oxygen and blood flow before that time during the antepartum period, we refer to that as a non-stress test.
We’re actually trying to stress the baby to see how the baby reacts to stress, and when the baby moves, we like to see the heart rate go up.
We like to see accelerations.
