Lexington Health Care Center of Chicago Ridge

Fifty years ago, the life expectancy in the United States was 74 years old for women and 66 years old for men. In 2018, the life expectancy for women in now 81 and the life expectancy for men is 76. In just 12 short years, that will jump to over 83 years of age for women and almost 80 years of age for men.

Given that this is just the average, many people will be living significantly longer than just a few decades ago. Those people will need care in their old age; it is no wonder that the healthcare industry is exploding.

At some point, senior citizens might need to go into a nursing home for varied amount of times. You may have to make the hard choice to put your loved one in a nursing home after they’ve been in the hospital, because they no longer can live on their own, because their care needs more advanced levels of training than you can provide, or any other reason. It is a difficult decision to make. It is even more difficult if you investigate the nursing homes you considering for your loved one’s care.

Levin & Perconti have a mission to make sure the nursing homes in Illinois and the Midwest are held to the highest of standards when it comes to patient care. We are committed to giving you all the information you need to make a good choice when it comes to nursing home care for your loved one, but also to know what signs to look for in the event something unfortunate does befall your family member when in a nursing home care.

Lexington Health Care facilities offer assisted and independent living facilities, hospice facilities, and skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities. On medicare.gov, they are generally rated well for patient care, staffing, and health inspections.

Lexington Health Care Center of Chicago Ridge

10300 SW Hwy
Chicago Ridge, IL 60415

Lexington Health Care Center of Chicago Ridge has 203 beds for residents and a general score of above average on medicare.gov, but a below average on overall staffing ratio. There are, on average, 160 residents every day at Lexington Health Care Center of Chicago Ridge, and the total number of nursing hours each patient receives each day is less than one and a half hours.

However, of that time, 54 minutes is spent with a registered nurse, well above the average. The most recent inspection of this facility listed on medicare.gov was in February of 2018. Here are a few of the infractions noted:

3/8/2017 Failure to make sure that the nursing home area is free from accident hazards and risks and provides supervision to prevent avoidable accidents.

A nursing assistant was moving a patient from their bed to their wheelchair so the resident could use the restroom. The nursing assistant failed to lock the bed into place and the resident lost their balance and fell, hitting their head on their dresser causing a large hematoma on their forehead.

3/7/2017 Failure to immediately tell the resident, the resident's doctor and a family member of the resident of situations (injury/decline/room, etc.) that affect the resident.

A resident had a cough and runny nose throughout the night and could not sleep. The nurse gave the resident cough syrup, but resident said it did not help. Resident said it had been going on for a couple of nights. Resident had asked nurse to call the doctor so better treatment could be described. Giving any resident unprescribed medicine is against policy. Not immediately contacting physician about the state of a resident is also against policy.

What You Should Look For

It is important to communicate with everyone who goes to visit your loved one while they are in the nursing home. If it is your parent, ensure that you and your siblings are all talking about anything one of you might have witnessed during your visit that seemed out of the ordinary. This way, the next time someone else goes to visit, they too can look for those signs.

Any unexplained weight loss, withdraw from communication, marks or bruises that cannot be explained, or regularly finding your loved one in dirty undergarments should be a cause for concern. Take those concerns to the administration. Tell them you’d like these things to be accounted for. If they cannot come up with a reasonable solution or answer for you, then you might need to take matters to a law firm like Levin and Perconti. We can help you get the care your loved one deserves.

Our deepest appreciation to the law firm of Levin & Perconti, and in particular to Margaret Battersby Black, in the handling of the lawsuit we field n behalf of our sister who sustained life-threatening injuries as a nursing home resident. I want to send my heartfelt thanks to John Perconti and the Levin & Perconti staff in taking our case. Not only were they so professional but also so caring and thoughtful. It was very difficult going over the facts in our mother's case but they were so compassionate and understanding and allowed us to be with them every step of the way. We were able to sit in on the depositions and we were really able to see how hard they worked on our behalf. M.R.Z., nursing home client
