Fungal Meningitis Symptoms
There has been a great deal of media coverage surrounding the fungal meningitis outbreak linked to steroid injection medication made and distributed by the New England Compounding Center (NECC). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and U.S. Food and Drug Administration have identified the states and individual facilities that received shipments of the contaminated injections, and encourage patients who received injections from May 21 through September 26, 2012 to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms.
In Illinois, there were three facilities operated by the APAC Centers for Pain Management that administered injections from the contaminated lots of medication: APAC Lincoln Park in Chicago, Thorek Memorial Hospital in Chicago and APAC in Westchester.
If you received an injection from a facility that received NECC injections, it is crucial that you understand the symptoms of fungal meningitis. Typically, symptoms present between one to four weeks after the injection. These include:
- Headache
- Stiff neck
- Fever
- Changes to the skin or tissue at or around the site of the injection
- Sensitivity to light
- Slurred speech
- Weakness
