Alden Debes Rehab and Health Care Center
If your senior family member is one of over a million residents in assisted living this year, you probably feel confident that they’re receiving the best care. Assisted living facilities and nursing homes are a great option for seniors who find they need assistance navigating daily tasks or frequent medical treatment late in life. Most families are not equipped to provide this type of care, thus the increasing number of senior citizens entering care facilities.
However, the standards of care administered at individual assisted living facilities are not necessarily equal across the board. The management, staff, and financial stability of every nursing home varies; each of these factors have an impact on the quality of care. Unfortunately, care often suffers when any of these factors is struggling, and residents are neglected or even abused.
This kind of mistreatment ranges from minor to severe. Here are a few examples of the issues that have led to lawsuits:
- Unauthorized Physical and/or Chemical Restraint Use
- Verbal Abuse
- Alzheimer's and Dementia Patients
- Falls, Improper Transfers, Drops by Staff
- Medication Errors
- Wandering and Elopement from facilities
- Pressure Sores
- Clogged Breathing Tubes
- Sepsis and Other Infections
- Malnutrition and/or Dehydration
- Physical or Sexual Assault or Abuse

If you suspect a loved one has been neglected or abused at Alden Debes Rehab and Health Care Center or another Illinois nursing home, there are things you can do.
First, continue to be vigilant. Visit as often as possible and speak with your family member frequently so you can be aware of anything that goes wrong. Remember, your family member might not feel comfortable sharing their experiences, out of embarrassment or a feeling that they shouldn’t burden you with their problems. When visiting, look for signs of neglect and abuse, such as:
- Untreated severe bedsores
- Unexplained injuries like bruises, burns, or scars
- Evidence of poor circulation like sunken cheeks or eyes
- Weight loss or malnourishment not due directly to an illness
- Frequent trips to the emergency room or doctor
- Wrong type or the wrong amount of medication administered
- Poor hygiene or unwashed clothes or hair
- Instances of wandering or elopement
- Frequently misplaced or lost personal items
- A lack of basic necessities, including utilities, water, and food
- A dirty room or bathroom
- Frequent trouble sleeping
- Unusual violent or withdrawn behavior
- Sudden depression or confusion
- Signs of trauma like rocking back and forth
Document any signs of abuse or questionable actions by staff with personal notes, photos, or video when possible. Don’t be afraid to question staff about best practices and protocols if you see something that seems off happening right in front of you or if you know something they do is against your loved one’s wishes or doctor’s orders.
If issues persist, take your concerns to the facility’s management. They should be willing to hear you out and offer viable solutions. However, if they are dismissive or become uncooperative and defensive, or if their solutions fail to satisfactorily resolve the problem and allow the abuse or neglect to continue, you may need to seek legal aid.Levin & Perconti Can Help
