Alden of Waterford
If your elderly family member is one of over a million residents receiving care in an assisted living facility this year, you probably always have concerns for their well-being and safety in the back of your mind. It’s difficult to entrust the care of a loved one to strangers, and the rising numbers of senior citizens in assisted living has resulted in stretched resources and more and more reports of elder abuse.
Quick Links
Elder abuse is any mistreatment or harm of an elderly person within a relationship where there is an expectation of trust. In nursing homes this relationship is the relationship between residents and the staff members who are expected to be professional caregivers. Because these residents can no longer live independently and care for themselves or require regular medical attention, they are especially vulnerable to the neglect and abuse of careless or overworked staff.
Elder abuse comes in many forms so it’s important to be informed and vigilant. Our nursing home abuse and neglect have personally seen cases of elder abuse that included the following:
- Medication Errors
- Burns
- Malnutrition and/or Dehydration
- Physical or Sexual Assault or Abuse
- Wandering and Elopement from facilities
- Unauthorized Physical and/or Chemical Restraint Use
If you are concerned about the safety and care of an elderly relative in assisted living, there are things you can do to mitigate the risk of abuse and neglect. The main thing to do is to get informed on how to pick a good facility, how to watch for signs of mistreatment, and how to act if you see evidence of harm. This is why Levin & Perconti share public information and ratings about Illinois nursing homes like Alden of Waterford on our website. We want you to know what facilities will serve your loved one best so you can do your due diligence in protecting them from elder abuse.

Despite receiving the highest rating possible for health inspection results, there were a few infractions found at Alden of Waterford in 2018, including the following:
4/17/18 Failure to reasonably accommodate the needs and preferences of each resident. Two residents were found to have defective mattresses that were not replaced in a timely fashion, causing them discomfort.
4/18/18 Failure to provide care and assistance to perform activities of daily living for any resident who is unable. The facility failed to provide basic grooming, feeding assistance, incontinence care, toileting, and repositioning for three residents, resulting in discomfort and poor hygiene.
4/17/18 Failure to provide appropriate care for residents who are continent or incontinent of bowel/bladder, appropriate catheter care, and appropriate care to prevent urinary tract infections. Improper cleaning technique was used on two residents with incontinence, putting them at risk for urinary tract infections.
Be Informed
The best way to protect a vulnerable loved one from elder abuse is to be informed as to how to pick the best facility for them and then stay abreast of the facility’s standards of care and treatment of your family member.
When picking a nursing home, do extensive research into ratings and reviews of the facilities you’re considering. Medicare publishes annual ratings based on public records and complaints online for exactly this purpose. You should also visit nursing homes multiple times to see what they are like in person.
After your relative moves in, continue to monitor the ratings and complaints published for the nursing home and make your own careful observations during regular visits. It’s not uncommon for standards of care to slip if a facility begins to struggle financially or changes management.
There are many indications of abuse and neglect that you should watch for when visiting and communicating with your loved one. Educate yourself on what these are, starting with the most obvious ones.
Look for physical signs of abuse and neglect such as unexplained injuries like fractures or bruises, untreated bedsores, or poor hygiene and an unkempt appearance. Your relative may also display behaviors indicative of abuse, such as being suddenly unusually withdrawn, violent, depressed, or confused.
Frequent trips to the hospital or instances of wandering or incorrect administration of medical treatments are also causes for concern. Also note if your relative’s room seems dirty or if personal items often go missing or are misplaced.
A senior may not be able to recognize or report mistreatment, so it is up to you to speak up if you suspect anything. If you become aware of any wrongdoing, document it and take your concerns to the facility’s management. If they do not offer satisfactory explanations or solutions to the issues you’ve identified or react defensively, it may be time to take legal action.

Testimonials
Not only were they so professional but also so caring and thoughtful. It was very difficult going over the facts in our mother's case but they were so compassionate and understanding and allowed us to be with them every step of the way. We were able to sit in on the depositions and we were really able to see how hard they worked on our behalf.
