Spinal Steroid Injection Recall Lawyers- Meningitis Outbreak Alerts

The attorneys at Levin & Perconti are currently investigating fungal meningitis cases for patients nationwide who received spinal steroid injections made and distributed by the New England Compounding Center. The CDC reported that a number of people throughout the U.S. have become ill or died as a result of this rare fungal meningitis outbreak.

As of December 12, 590 confirmed diagnoses of fungal meningitis, stroke or infection have been reported in 19 states, and 37 people have died. And now, there are new FDA warnings that the outbreak may be linked to other drugs from the NECC, including drugs used during open heart surgery and eye surgeries.

Two cases have been reported in the Chicago area, but health officials anticipate more patients who received the recalled products may be diagnosed. It is estimated that 350 people in Illinois received tainted injections.

The steroid, methylprednisolone acetate, was distributed to 23 states from July to September 2012. Now, the company has recalled over 17,000 vials of these steroids and it is believed that 14,000 patients received the tainted injections. To see a current breakdown of cases by state, click here.

According to a press release on the Illinois Department of Public Health’s website, three APAC Centers for Pain Management facilities in Illinois provided the spinal steroid shots to patients: Thorek Hospital Professional Building in Chicago, APAC Lincoln Park, and the APAC in the Prairie Medical Building in Westchester, IL. Patients have been contacted and many await further test results.

What are the Symptoms of Fungal Meningitis?

  • Fever
  • Severe headaches
  • Speech problems
  • Changes to the skin or tissue surrounding the site of injection
  • Stiff neck

Margaret, Daisy and Bryan. This magnificent cohesive team led by Margaret represented us for my mom's nursing home wrongful death case. They were most patient and responded timely to many questions throughout the entire process. All demonstrated professionalism and extensive knowledge of case and state laws. Their in-depth investigative work uncovered details which were unknown to us and yet sadly confirmed our suspicions. We would recommend the Levin and Perconti Law firm and especially this team. I want to send my heartfelt thanks to John Perconti and the Levin & Perconti staff in taking our case. Not only were they so professional but also so caring and thoughtful. It was very difficult going over the facts in our mother's case but they were so compassionate and understanding and allowed us to be with them every step of the way. We were able to sit in on the depositions and we were really able to see how hard they worked on our behalf. M.R.Z., nursing home client
