September 27th, 2022 – Residents of six Chicago area nursing facilities filed a class action suit against the Alden Group seeking to end chronic and intentional understaffing at the facilities. The complaint alleges Alden staffing was significantly below even the statutory minimum required nursing hours during the time period from 2018 through 2020, leading to numerous injuries and illness. While Alden profits, residents pay a painful and sometimes even deadly price. Here are a few of the deficiencies described in the most recent health inspection report for Alden Princeton Nursing & Rehab Center:
3/15/18 Failure to ensure services provided by the nursing facility meet professional standards of quality. The facility was found to have broken professional standards by allowing a licensed practical nurse instead of a registered nurse flush a resident’s portacatheter and sign off on medical paperwork.
3/15/18 Failure to provide care and assistance to perform activities of daily living for any resident who is unable. The facility failed to ensure residents’ fingernails were cleaned and trimmed. Three residents were observed with long and soiled fingernails.
3/15/18 Failure to provide appropriate care for residents who are continent or incontinent of bowel/bladder, appropriate catheter care, and appropriate care to prevent urinary tract infections. It was found that staff failed to cover the tubing ends of urinary catheter drainage bags, properly dispose of used catheter drainage bags, and provide incontinence care in a timely manner. Two residents complained of being left wet for hours. Catheter tubing and bags were not handled properly for another resident who has a history of urinary tract infections.

When you identify some promising facilities, we suggest you schedule tours so you can see the properties yourself. On these tours, note things like cleanliness and how staff interact with residents. Bring a list of questions with you concerning aspects of care that would pertain to your loved one so you can learn about specific protocols.
After you select a nursing home and your relative moves in, stay in close contact so you can monitor their care and they can report harmful activity to you. Visiting is the best way to do this, as it allows you to see your family member’s living conditions yourself.
Many victims of abuse cannot or will not report hurtful behavior, so you should be aware of the signs of abuse. There are many, but you can start with these:
- Untreated severe bedsores
- Unexplained injuries like bruises, burns, or scars
- Evidence of poor circulation like sunken cheeks or eyes
- Weight loss or malnourishment not due directly to an illness
- Frequent trips to the emergency room or doctor
- Wrong type or the wrong amount of medication administered
- Poor hygiene or unwashed clothes or hair
- Instances of wandering or elopement
- Frequently misplaced or lost personal items
- A lack of basic necessities, including utilities, water, and food
- A dirty room or bathroom
- Frequent trouble sleeping
- Unusual violent or withdrawn behavior
- Sudden depression or confusion
- Signs of trauma like rocking back and forth
Taking Action
If you observe abuse of a loved one or signs of it, take immediate action to report it and prevent it from happening in the future.
Document what you have seen and take it to the facility’s management. They should take your experiences seriously and thoroughly investigate the situation, then take immediate action to rectify the situation. However, if they become dismissive or defensive, or fail to take satisfactory action, you may need to resort to legal action.
